What is “Smart Oceans 2020”?

Smart Oceans 2020 is an NSF Convergence Accelerator Conference. It is intended to “blue sky” the Future of the Oceans in a “Smart Oceans/Ocean Internet of Things” virtual conference.   The conference aims to brainstorm the next major innovations in Ocean science needed to accelerate our field forward. The success of this conference may lead to a significant investment from the National Science Foundation for ocean research and innovation. Past topics have received investments of more than $50M.

What is the agenda and who is speaking?

The conference will take place during the week of Oct 5-9. The conference will feature a mix of invited speakers, lightning talks, and brainstorming sessions. The agenda is still being finalized. If you would like to speak or want to nominate a “big thinker” to speak, please let us know!

Who should join?

We welcome all stakeholders who work in oceans - including researchers, companies (including startups, non-profits, etc.), students, foundations, and government agencies. We also welcome participants from other fields who would like to join forces to tackle big ocean problems.

I have (or don’t have) a team of collaborators already, and I would love to receive funding to accelerate our work. Can I participate?

Yes. We welcome previously-formed teams as well as new teams. Please participate and help steer the discussions toward broad themes.

I work on oceans but “Smart Oceans” seems a bit far from what I do. Would I be relevant?

Yes. The conference charter is to broadly envision the future of oceans and to enable convergence, acceleration, and real-world impact.

Are there eligibility criteria in terms of past or concurrent NSF funding?

There are no eligibility requirements in terms of past or concurrent NSF funding; the focus is on convergence, acceleration, and impact.
